Ten youths—seven women and three men—take turns telling stories for 10 days.

In 1348, Giovanni Boccaccio was working (when he had to) as a tax assessor in Florence, having drifted into law after giving up on his father’s profession, banking. His real passion was writing, and he’d made a reputation as a poet and writer of prose romances, notably Fiammetta (1343), which has been described as the first psychological novel, based on his romance with a married Neapolitan noblewoman.
